3 signs of pregnancy discrimination at work

On Behalf of | Dec 27, 2024 | Employment Discrimination

You may experience feelings of being undervalued at work after becoming pregnant. You might not receive the same opportunities or consideration as your colleagues. This is not just wrong. It’s against the law. In New York, pregnant workers have rights at work. Here are three signs that your workplace might be breaking these laws.

Your boss treats you differently after learning you’re pregnant

After you inform your boss of your pregnancy, things might change. Perhaps they stop assigning you important tasks or begin treating you negatively for no apparent reason. This could be discrimination. The law prohibits your boss from treating you differently simply because you are pregnant. If this occurs, understand that it is not acceptable.

Your employer denies you a promotion

If you are performing well at work but are suddenly passed over for a promotion, or if you are prevented from applying for a better position within the company, and this is happening because of your pregnancy, it is unlawful. Pregnant workers have the right to advance in their careers just like any other employee.

Your employer fails to help you work safely

Sometimes, being pregnant means you need minor adjustments at work. For example, you might require more frequent bathroom breaks or a more comfortable chair to sit on. The law says your job should try to accommodate your pregnancy-related needs. If they refuse without a good reason, such as causing significant difficulty or expense for the business (an “undue hardship”), that could be discrimination.

Remember, you have rights at work when you’re pregnant. If you observe signs that your employer violates your rights, it may be beneficial to seek legal counsel. You deserve fair treatment at your job, regardless of your pregnancy status.
