As an employer, you have a host of responsibilities. Not only do you have to ensure that the business is profitable, but you need to look after a team of staff.

It’s rare for everyone to be happy all of the time at work. Nonetheless, there is a difference between having a bad day and facing unlawful behavior. One example of unlawful behavior in the workplace is discrimination.

Discrimination occurs when a worker is treated unfavorably because of their race, ethnicity, gender or other protected characteristics. What can you do as an employer to prevent discrimination in the workplace?

Make your core ethos clear

The first step you want to take is to make it as clear as possible to your team members that discrimination will not be tolerated. One of the most effective ways to do this is to outline the core ethos of your company, which should include non-discrimination, in the employee handbook. This is a document that team members can read so that there is no confusion about the company’s stance on discrimination.

Lean into training and education

Discrimination is never nice for those on the receiving end, and there are numerous reasons why it may happen. Often, discrimination stems from ignorance. An employee or manager may have outdated views that do not fit in with the modern workplace.

One thing you can do to help this is to set up regular training days. You may even consider bringing in an outside speaker who has an in-depth knowledge of the subject. Refresher training on discrimination in the workplace will certainly do your company no harm.

Having clear anti-discrimination policies and procedures will not only make your employees feel safe, but it will protect you from lawsuits. Seeking legal guidance will help you put these policies and procedures into practice. If you need assistance regarding these policies and procedures, you should speak to an experienced law firm today.
